Environmental Sustainability

With the development of Araluen Park Cottages, the owners have adopted an objective of providing a sustainable living environment with minimal impacts on the environment, without sacrificing lifestyle. The land has been taken out of agricultural production, stock have been removed, and gullies and slopes are being restored to their original vegetation communities which are evident in the adjoining landscape.

The design of the cottages and many of the construction materials used reflect consideration of efficient energy uses and sustainable building materials. Where appropriate, the concepts of re-use and recycling have been applied to many of the materials, fixtures and furniture used in the development. 

 

All electrical energy is provided by a solar power system.
                           

Rain water is harvested from the cottages to meet domestic potable water supply requirements. LPG gas is used for instantaneous hot water systems and for cooking.

 

An award winning waste water management system complete with sub-surface drip irrigation has been installed to minimise nutrient and phosphorus discharge levels.

Household waste is segregated for recycling thereby minimising discharges to landfill. Even food scraps are collected for composting or to feed the chooks.
 

Rainforest restoration has commenced in the Bunga Creek gully which runs through the property. In addition to restoring habitat for native species, rainforests also provide significant benefits in nutrient capture and sediment entrapment.
